Mental health licensing is handled by the Puerto Rico Administration of Mental Health and Anti-Addiction Services. Future therapists must complete a master’s degree or higher in a 45 semester-hour counseling program accredited by the Council of Higher Education of Puerto Rico to earn a professional counselor with a provisional license credential. Then, they must complete at least 500 hours of practice supervised by a certified mentor and pass the NCE to become a licensed professional counselor.
Therapists in San Juan usually charge by the session. Per-session costs run about $30 to $150-plus but average between $70 and $120. To help you cover therapy costs, a limited number of therapists on this list accept some commercial insurance plans, and about half of them offer a sliding fee scale based on income. Many offer a free initial consultation so you can decide if they’re a good match before you start paying for services.
